Purpose: The efficacy and safety of propranolol versus corticosteroids in the traetment ofinfantile hemangiomas(IHS)is controversial. This study aims to collect and summarize theliteratures, and to provide evidence-based medical evidence for clinical treatment.Materials and methods: We search the Randomized Controlled trials(RCTs) ofpropranolol versus corticosteroids in the treatment of infantile hemangiomas(IHS) fromMedline,Pubmed,Cochrane Library, wangfang and CNKI database, which are publishedbefore September2013.Then a meta-analysis is performed by the RevMan5.0software.Results:9studies are included from the literature search, which report the randomizedcontrolled studies of the treatment in the infantile hemangiomas(IHS) between usingpropranolol only and corticosteroids or corticosteroid only. The efficacy of propranolol ismore than corticosteroid (RR=1.94,95%CI:1.40,2.69,P<0.0001).And the adverse eventsof propranolol is less than corticosteroids(RR=0.42,95%CI:0.28,0.64,P<0.0001).Inthe field of the treatment of the IHs ulcer, there is no randomized controlled study of bothdrugs. After summing up3studies which report the treatment of the IHs ulcer bypropranolol,we draw the conclusion that propranolol may be better than other treatmentmethods. Conclusion:Compared with the simple application of corticosteroids, propranolol can beused as a first-line treatment for infantile hemangioma.
