Objective:To compare two different methods in treating Cervical Spondylosis of Vertebral Artery (CSA) patients, namely acupuncture versus acupuncture with blood release, with the objective of providing clinical evidence on the more superior method in treating CSA.Metholds:41CSA patients were randomly divided into two groups:20patients in the Control Group and21patients in the Observation Group. The Control Group was given acupuncture treatment while the Observation Group was given acupuncture with blood release treatment. Similiar acu-points were applied on the patients of these two groups. On top of acupuncture, the Observation Group was also given blood release treatment on the most umcomfortable or painful spot on the neck or shoulder area. The amount of blood release was about5-10ml. Frequency of treatment for both groups was once a week for10sessions. Observation standards were based on1) scores on the Clinical Symptoms,2) McGill and3) VAS. SPSS16.0software were used to compute the eventual statistical results.Results:(1) Scores on Clinical Symptoms. Results showed that both groups had improvement on this score. Between the two, results from the Observation Group was superior to the Control Group.(2) McGill and VAS score. Likewise, both groups showed improvement on the McGill and VAS scores. While both groups experienced pain relief to a certain extend, results from the Observation Group is superior to the Control Group.(3) PPI score. In terms of PPI score, there was no significant difference between the2groups. The main reason could be due to the long lead time in between treatments.(4) The Overall Total Effective Rate for the Observation Group was75%while that of the Control Group was61%. In terms of Total Recovery Rate, there was statistical significance where the Observation Group scored35%as compared to14%on the Control Group. Conclusion:Acupuncture with blood release is an effective method in treating CSA. This method could significantly improved the clinical symptoms of the patients and could relief pains to a greater extend as compared to only applying acupuncture on treating CSA patients.
