Primary osteoporosis, as well as its complications has always beenthe threat to the human body function and life standard, especially in theelderly. Along with the social population aging phenomenon has becomeincreasingly serious, primary osteoporosis has been a major cause of deathin the elderly, increasing the burden of the world. The effective preventionand treatment of primary osteoporosis become a popular topic in the fieldof life science research in recent years. Accepted therapeutic target is toreduce the risk of fractures, rather than increasing bone mineral density.Accordingly, apart from the use of traditional medicine, new drugs havebeen developed constantly, and achieve effectively. In the treatment ofprimary osteoporosis drugs, calcium and vitamin D are regarded as thefoundation, while bisphosphonates is like a cornerstone. Calcitonin has anadvantage in pain-relief. The use of hormones, such as estrogen receptormodulators, androgen and selective androgen receptor modulators(SARMs), and parathyroid hormone, has an expansion. Besides, the latestresearch and development of drugs such as Denosumab, Strontiumranelate, selective inhibitor of cathepsin K, Monoclonal antibodies against Sclerostin, with the sufficient data from many experiments, are of greatvalue in guiding for clinical treatment. This paper will elaborate theprogress of the treatment of primary osteoporosis in the elderly.
