Objective:To explore the laws of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes and the existence of sputum-stasis stagnation syndrome in bronchial asthma. And to observe and evaluate the effect of " Xiongzhu Decoction", an empirical prescription developed by Professor Shen, on acute attack of asthma with sputum-stasis stagnation syndrome, from the clinical symptoms, signs and the eosinophil count in peripheral blood, in order to prove that it is an effective prescription.Method:By reviewing the present research on the etiology, mechanism, syndrome classification in TCM and the pathogenesis in modern medicine, a link between blood stasis and asthma was suggested. Based on the traditional theory of TCM, structural equation model was applied to explore the existence of the bronchial asthma with sputum-stasis stagnation syndrome in asthma, and analyze its structure.60selected cases were divided into two groups, by using the simple random-sampling method. The control group (30cases) had been treated by salmeterol/fluticasone propionate (secretive) and the treatment group (30cases) added with Xiongzhu Decoction. Both groups were treated7days as a course,2courses at least. SPSS19.0was used to analyze the data on symptom integral and the eosinophil count in peripheral blood before and after treatment, which could show the difference between the two groups in clinical efficacy.Result:Through the analysis,5TCM syndromes of bronchial asthma were found, including the sputum-stasis stagnation syndrome. After treatment, patients in both groups have an improvement in clinical symptoms after treatment, while the ones in treatment group benefit more. The total efficiency was90%in treatment group, while83.3%in the control group. What’s more, the treatment group showed better effect on the improvement of cough, sputum quantity and the quality of Phlegm compared with the control group(P<0.05). Moreover, the peripheral blood eosinophils (EOS) count in two groups were both decreased, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05).Conclusion:Among the complex syndrome types, sputum-stasis stagnation syndrome can be found in acute paroxysmal asthma. The combination of TCM treatment and modern medicine treatment can not only control clinical symptoms better, but also decrease the levels of EOS. Xiongzhu Decoction is an effective prescription in treating asthma.
