Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe illnessuncertainty and therapeutic compliance, and evaluate the existing relationbetween these variables in individuals with sudden hearing loss (SHL).Methods: This study examined110inpatients which fits the criteriaby convenience sampling method with the Mishel disease uncertainty scale(MUIS).Then evaluated the related indexes of behavior by using self-madehospitalized dairy. Dates were analyzed with software SPSS17.0.Thestatistics methods used included t tests,ANOVA, Pearson and Spearmancorrelation analysis and liner regression.Results:1. The illness uncertainty of patients with SHL was presented atmoderate level with average score of93.58±11.44.Unpredictability andinconsistent or lacking information had the highest score.2. SHL patients had a poor compliance with therapy with averagescore of33.87±3.33. The was a significantly difference in illnessuncertainty or subscale in content of income、expense reimbursement、 serious symptoms (p<0.05).3. Illness uncertainty was negatively related to the therapeuticcompliance(r=-0.322, p<0.05).4. The regression analysis indicated that therapeutic compliance couldbe predicted with the mutual affects of income and illness uncertainty(R2=20.1%); the medical compliance could be predicted with the serioussymptoms and illness complex (R2=8.6%).Conclusion:1. SHL patients living with moderate level illness uncertainty.2. The therapeutic compliance of SHL patients was poor, which wasworse in patients with low income or no insurance and serious symptoms.3. The illness uncertainty had a significantly relation with compliance.4. Compliance of SHL patients was significantly related to income, expense reimbursement and illness uncertainty. A worse compliance wasassociated with lower income, without medical insurance or lessreimbursement, and a complex therapeutic regime.Nurses should take more attention to investigate the level of illnessuncertainty and compliance in SHL patients. According to the analysis, afree treatment, social welfare/charity institution help, as well as a simpleregime should be taken to decrease illness uncertainty, enhance complianceand promote the rehabilitation.
