ObjectiveTo investigate the association between Down syndrome(DS) andcongenital heart diseases(CHD).MethodsA total of575cases with Down syndrome from Jan1997to Mar2013in Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University wererecruited.Retrospective study was used to analyze the prevalence and typesof CHD in DS children, the relationship between the karyotype of DS andthe types of CHD,pulmonary hypertension(PH) and operation treatment.ResultsThere were370cases(64.35%) with CHD in575cases with DS.322cases(87.03%) were septal defects. In which57cases(15.41%) were atrialseptal defects,36cases(9.72%) were ventricular septal defects,12cases(3.24%) wereatrioventricular septaldefects,217cases(58.65%) werecomplex septal defects.48cases(12.97%) were non-septal defect types ofCHD(including patent ductus arteriosus、tetralogy of Fallot、double outletright ventricle、pulmonary atresia and so on). There was no statistically significant between the karyotype of DS and the types of CHD. There were246cases(66.49%) with pulmonary hypertension.70cases(18.92%) hadinterventional or surgical operations. All of them had descending ofpulmonary artery pressure after operation.40cases had other malformationssuch as gastrointestinal tract malformation,polydactylism/polydactyly,visual impairment and so on.ConclusionsThe most common type of CHD with DS was atrial septal defect, thesecond one was ventricular septal defect. There was no relationship betweenthe karyotype of DS and the types of CHD. The patients with CHD in DSwere prone to form pulmonary hypertension. So the comprehensivetreatment plan should be developed as early as possible.
