ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of intramedullary stabilization of tibiofibularfractures with titanium elastic nail (TEN) in children.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed59consecutive skeletally immaturepatients with tibiofibular fractures who were stabilized with TEN in theC-arm fluoroscopy between January2008and November2013in ourhospital. There were43cases of male and16cases of female. All patientsaged from2to14years (mean6years). All patients were followed up aftersurgery, including fracture healing, wound conditions, limb length, range ofmotion of knee and ankle, gait, etc.ResultsAll the59cases were followed up ranged from6-36months (mean16months). All fractures were healed without serious complications. Therewere no postoperative complications like infections, swelling and pain atthe end of the nail, TEN broken, tibial epiphysis injury and unnormallfunction of the lower limb joint. According to the Flynn evaluation standard, excellent result were observed in50cases, good result wereobserved in9cases, the excellent and good rate was100%.ConclusionsIntramedullary stabilization with titanium elastic nail can achieveeffective fixation in the treatment of tibiofibular fractures, it has advantagesof micro-trauma, tiny tissue damage, little influence on blood circulation atthe fracture site, lower adverse reaction, excellent material, good stability, rapid healing, short hospital stay and few complications.
