The dissolution of dental hard tissues is the most important progress in caries.Modern researches prove that caries are the results of numerous cycles ofdemineralization and remineralization. If demineralization dominates, caries happen.If remineralization dominates, caries be repaired. Remineralization is an effectiveway to prevent and impair caries. Remineralization treatments have become a hotresearch area in recent years.Natural medicine is now very popular for its natural origin、slight toxicity、economical resources,et al. Galla Chinensis is one of them. Many researches havefound that Galla Chinensis can not only block cariogenic bacteria growing、metabolizing、adhering, and can also improve the antacid power of hard dentaltissues, promote hard tissues remineralizing, and that GCE and GCE-B is theeffective ingredients of Galla Chinensis promoting the hard dental tissuesremineralizing.High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) is a very usefulinstrument in modern lab studying crystals. Under the HRTEM, we can see directlythe atom world. It can not only help us watch the crystals ultramicro topography, butalso can help us determine crystals structure. HRTEM has been used studying onenamel carious lesions by many researchers, and found that demineralized enamelcrystals become various sizes and irregular shapes with unclear crystal angles orcentral perforation, remineralized enamel crystals become restoration at the edge orthe center of the partially dissolved crystals or new crystal formation at the microporebetween the crystals or growth of surviving crystals.Objectives:Study the effect of Chinese Gallotannins on enhancing remineralization of initialenamel carious lesions by HRTEM through crystal ultramicro topography; find moreevidences of Galla Chinensis being a new anticaries medicine. Methods:1. Prepare artificially initial enamel carious lesions of bovine incisor teeth in vitroby chemical measure.2. Groups of experimentsA:DDW group (negative control group)B:GCE group (experimental group)C:GCE-B group (experimental group)D:NaF group (positive control group)concentration of Group D is1000ppm;concentration of Group B and C is4000ppm,pH is adjusted to7.0by2mol.L-1NaOH.3. Put the caries in Ph-cycling models making them remineralizing.4. Prepare the HRTEM specimens of carious bodies5. Observe by HRTEM.Results:DDW group HRTEM observation, various sizes and irregular shapes crystals withunclear angles or central crystal perforation at the artificially initial enamel cariousbodies. GCE/GCE-B groups HRTEM observation, demineralized crystals repaired atthe edge or center of the dissolved crystals or at the micropore between the crystals.The same phenomenon appeared at NaF group.Conclusions:We found that there are remineralizing phenomenons in GCE/GCE-B groups byHRTEM through crystal ultramicro topography, proving that Chinese Gallotanninshave the ability of enhancing initial enamel carious lesions remineralizing, there ismore evidence for Galla Chinensis being a new anticaries medicine.
