Objective To explore the relation between pubic symphysis separation and pelvic volume. So as to provide guidance for orthopaedic surgeons when treating pelvic fractures especially the unstable pelvic fractures. Methods (1) The stage of establishing a3-D digital model of pelvic ring. The procedures for establishing the3-D model with the MSCT data include data acquisition, data saving and transmission, threshold values setup, image edit and3-D calcution.(2)Simulation the separation of pubic symphysis and measuring of the parameters. The procedures include measuring pelvic volume when the pelvis is intact, simulation the separation of pubic symphysis until10cm, increased1cm every time, measuring of pelvic volume, diameter of the pelvic inlet and outlet, the angle between the iliac articular surface and the horizontal plane in coronal plane, then statistically anylyse the results, the results represented by x±s, P<0.05indicates a significant difference. Results We established the3D digital model of pelvic ring with the application of Mimics software, based on the MSCT and DICOM technique. The3D model is accurate, which is suitable for the further study. Pelvic volume increases with the separation of pubic symphysis. When separation of pubic symphysis added lem, pelvic volume increased7.52%, which showed a linear relationship, r=0.998, P<0.001. When the pubic symphysis separated, the angle between iliac articular surface and the horizontal plane increased, there is a linear relationship, P<0.001. Diameter of pelvic inlet and outlet increased with the separation of pubic symphysis. Conclusion The establishment of pelvic3D model is accurate, with the Mimics software, which is based on MSCT and DICOM technique. Pelvic volume, diameter of pelvic inlet and outlet, the angle between iliac articular surface and the horizontal plane increases when the pubic symphysis is separated.
