Objective:The one aim of this study is to evaluate the degree of the root resorption in tongue thrusting by using panoramic radiography, the other aim is to discover relationship between tongue thrusting and mouth breathing providing effective theoretical basis for orthodontic clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods:Studyl48patients with tongue thrusting and48patients with normal swallowing were selected in department of orthodontics of Beijing Tongzhou Xinhua Hospital. All patients were13-16years old and were scanned by panoramic radiography. All patients were scanned by panoramic radiography of radiology department of Xinhua Hospital with identical condition. Using Jiang Ruo-ping’s method, radiographs, were used to evaluate the degree of root resorption for statistical analysis to employed for comparision of the different series. The data about degree of root resorption was arranged on SPSS13.0software.The x2test were used for statistical analysis.Study238patients with tongue thrusting and38patients with normal swallowing were selected in department of orthodontics of Beijing Tongzhou Xinhua Hospital. All patients without Airway constriction were11-14years old, whose air tube were unobstructed. We evaluate the number of people with mouth breathing. The x2test were used for statistical analysis.Result:1.The degree of root resorption on incisors with tongue thrusting was statistically different from that with normal swallowing(P<0.05).2.The number of mouth breathing with tongue thrusting was significantly different from that with normal swallowing (P<0.01).Conclusion:1.Tongue thrusting may increased root resorption.2.Tongue thrusting may increased mouth breathing.3.The dangers of tongue thrusting should be focus on early malocclusion.Training patients with normal swallowing, to reduce the risk of root absorption occurs. And correcting abnormal swallowing is an active correction method of treat mouth breathing.Establishing normal nasal breathing, exercising normal chewing, have positive significance for regulars wallowing function.Early treatment could reduce morbidity from mouth breathing and guide the children maxillofacial normal development.
