Objective To evaluate Cognitive changes before and after operation in patients with hydrocephalus and analyze effect factors of cognition. According to the expression of P38in cerebrospinal fluid of patients, we expect to explore the relationship between P38and cognition. Methods We use the America Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale to analyze hydrocephalus associated factors, including age, sex, literacy levels, amounts of drug types, medical history, etc. Healthy volunteers served as normal controls. Correlational analysis of influential factors of cognition was conducted. After collecting the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with hydrocephalus, we test the cognitive changes and P38expression in these samples before and after operation. Meanwhile, RT-PCR and Western bolt were used to detect the expression of P38mRNA and protein in cerebrospinal fluid mononuclear cells. Results Compared with the control group, the MMSE scores of hydrocephalus patients decline sharply (P<0.01). There was significant correlation between cognitive dysfuction and age, sex, literacy levels, amounts of drug types, medical history. Postoperative cognitive dysfuction of hydrocephalus patients improved significantly, in particular, cognition enhanced remarkable1weeks after the operation, and the best in week4. The expression of P38compared with the control group was obviously changed in different time periods in cerebrospinal fluid (P<0.05), the change of the expression in different time periods was obviously, also increase remarkable1weeks after the operation, and the maximum in week4. The statistical results show that cognition is enhanced after operation and there is the same trend of P38expression and cognition. Conclusions Hydrocephalus patients have cognitive dysfunction, which can be improved after surgery. Cognition is related to with age, sex, literacy levels, amounts of drug types, medical history of patients. P38is closely related to the Changes of cognition in patients with hydronephrosis operation and it is an important factor in maintaining cognitive function.
