Non-state-owned medical institutions first appeared in China in1980s. After30years development, these institutions have become important participants in Chinesehealthcare market. Non-state-owned medical institutions helps the reallocation ofmedical resources across the nation. These institutions contributes to the improvementof people’ health, and the development of the society and the economy. However, it isalso true that Chinese non-state-owned hospitals are generally small and lacks enoughsocial influences. The reasons are various, both subjective and objective, coveringfrom the government’s policy making to the hospitals’ business running.Aier Eye Hospital Group Co., Ltd is the first non-state-owned medical institutionthat went public in China. It is also one of the first companies listed on the ChiNextboard of Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Through decades of development, the group hascreated the largest ophthalmology hospital chains in China. The success of Aier is arepresentative case of Chinese non-state-owned hospitals. In order to achieve furthersustainable development and to keep its leadership in the market, the company requiressuitable corporate strategies.The paper is structured as follow. First, the paper employsdifferent models, including PEST and Porter’s Five Forces Model etc., to analyze themacro and the industry-level environment that Aier is in. Second, the paper appliesSWOT analysis to investigate the competitive advantages and disadvantages of thecompany, and the opportunities and threats it faces. Proper corporate strategies arethen formulated basing on the SWOT analysis. Finally, the explicit business actionsare given according to these core corporate strategies.This paper aims to give suggestions for the further development of Aier EyeHospital Group. Meanwhile, the paper may also be helpful for other non-state-ownedmedical institutions, and for those private capitals who want to take participate inChinese healthcare industry.
