Objective To investigate the effects of erythromycin on the regulation of the Th1/Th2cells and T lymphocyte apoptosis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs) of bronchial asthmatic children. Methods Seventy-four cases were included according to the diagnostic criteria of asthma children. peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) before and after erythromycin treatment for thirty days were isolated from venous blood. Levels of Th1,Th1/Th2of PBMCs were determined by single-cell fluorescence staining method; Levels of sFas and sFasL in serum of asthmatic children before and after the treatment was examined with sandwich ELIS A methods; Rates of T lymphocyte apoptosis incubated for Oh and48h before and after the treatment were detected with acridone acetamiprid orange-brominated b ingot dyeing method. Statistical analysis was performed. Results After erythromycin treatment, the levels of Thl,Th1/Th2were significantly decreased than before treatment(p<0.01); the Th2and serum sFas, sFasL levels were significantly higher than before(p<0.01); lymphocyte apoptosis rates incubated for0h,48h were significantly increased than before (P<0.01).Conclusions Erythromycin may reduce the Fas mediated apoptosis of T lymphocytes (Th1), promote the production of Th1in PBMC, and restore the balance of Th1/Th2existed in asthmatic children. Children with asthma could benefit from the use of cefuroxime.
