Objective:This study was designed to compare the three dimensional differences oforopharyngeal airway among adult high angle patients with different sagittal facialpattern and compare the difference between male and female. Investigated thecorrelations between the morphology of oropharyngeal airway and the maxillofacialstructures.Methods:1. This study selected sixty high angle adults(GoGn-SN>37.7o Age:18-36y) instomatological hospital affiliated to NanChang University from June2011to June2013. The three-dimensional Cone Beam Computed Tomography(CBCT) images ofevery patient were taken in radiology department under the same condition in ourhospital. All of them were divided into three groups of skeletal facial type based ontheir ANB angles(classⅡ:ANB>4.7o, classⅠ:0.7o≤ANB≤4.7o, classⅢ:ANB<0.7o)and20patients in each group, half males and half females.2. Using the InvivoDental5.1software for reconstructing the CBCT image ofeach patient, adjusting the middle saggital plane and axial plane in coronal, sagittaland axis view, then measuring the distances, volumes and min cross-sectional areas.3. All the data were analyzed by the means of SPSS18.0. The factorial designanalysis of variance was performed among the different sagittal skeletal patterngroups and between the different gender; The SNK-q test was carried on themeasurements which exist statistical significances differences in different sagittalpattern. In addition, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was performed for theassociation between the airway measurement data and ANB angle or GoGn-SN angle.Results:1. The oropharyngeal airway measurement data had statistical significancesdifferences in the W-ETP among different sagittal pattern (P<0.05). The rest ofmeasurement data didn’t have statistical significances.(P>0.05). The measurementdata of H-GP, H-toal, W-PNSP, W-ETP, V-GP, V-toal also had statistical significances between male and female (P<0.05), and the mean of male was biggerthan femal. Otherwise, interactive effect did not exist among the different sagittalpatterns and genders. The results of SNK-q test about W-ETP in different sagittal patterns indicatedthat there exist statistical significance(P<0.05) between sagittal skeletal patternⅠandpattern Ⅲ, do not exist statistical significance(P>0.05) between sagittal skeletalpattern Ⅰand patternⅡ, and do not exist between sagittal skeletal patternⅡandpatternⅢ either.2. The measurements of oropharyngeal airway didn’t exist correlation with ANBangle, but exist some degrees of correlation with GoGn-SN angle. L-UTP W-UTPV-PP V-toal S-min in males showed negative correction with GoGn-SN angle. H-GPin females show positive correction with ANB angle.Conclusion1. The difference of upper airway of high angle adult among different sagittalpattern was mainly on W-ETP.2. The difference of upper airway of high angle adult between different genderwas mainly on H-GP H-total W-PNSP W-ETP V-GP V-total, and the results of maleswere bigger than females.3. The change of mandibular plane may produce influences on morphology ofairway in patients with high angle mandibular plane. It may produce more influenceson males, and less influences on females.
