Objective By evaluating the effect of periconceptional folic acid intervention, discussing the core factors affecting cognition, use and compliance of folic acid during the periconceptional period, this will put forward scientific evidence in order to reduce the occurrence of birth defects relating to the lack of folic acid. Methods Women who have been pregnant at least three months or had given birth to a child for one year are chose as research object with cluster sampling. We develop face-to-face and anonymous survey with self-designed questionnaire both in hospitals and objects’ households. Women who have taken part in the project of folic acid intervention are chose as intervention crowd. On the contrary, the others are control group. This paper deals with the influential factors affecting cognition, use and compliance of folic acid during the periconceptional period by means of logistic regression analysis. Results (1) The rate of awareness of NTDs is 72.44% in the intervention group, and it is 43.41% in the control group; the rate of awareness of effect which folic acid could be used to prevent neural tube defects is 55.61% in the intervention group, and it is 33.67% in the control group; at the same time, as far as the rate of awareness of optimal time of folic acid use, the former is 38.78%, the latter is 12.58%. (2) The self-expressed using rate of folic acid is 95.37% in the intervention group, and it is 32.15% in the other group; in the intervention group, the using rate of folic acid is 56.34%, and it’s 21.91% in the control group; in the meantime, as far as the effective taking rate of folic acid, the first mentioned of two is 29.02%, the later is 11.16%. (3) The rate of partially effective compliance behavior of taking folic acid is 8.29% in the intervention group, and it is 2.23% in the control group; the rate of effective compliance behavior of taking folic acid is 16.34% in the intervention group, and it is 5.17% in the control group; the rate of compliance of taking folic acid is 15.61% in the intervention group, and it is 4.78% in the control group; (4)There are several main factors which affect the cognition of folic acid on the group of pregnant and postnatal women, such as whether woman has accepted health examination before pregnancy, health education, family members’ cognition of folic acid and so on. (5) Cognitive level, gravidity, parity, number of abortions and so on make up the main factors which affect the use of folic acid. (6) The main factors which affect compliance of taking folic acid are cultural level and cognitive level. (7) The professionals’cognitive rate of neural tube defects and folic acid are 97.14% and 94.29%, and their cognitive rate of use time of folic acid is 82.86%.Conclusion By putting the project of folic acid intervention, pregnant women’s cognitive rate, taking rate and compliance rate have been improved significantly, but there is also lack of correct cognition on the key point of knowledge. The effective taking rate of folic acid is still low in the intervention group, and invalid compliance rate gives a bigger contribution. Cognitive level is the main factor which affects the using rate of folic acid and the rate of compliance. Because of the relatively low level of professionals’ cognition of folic acid, it leads to lower cognitive level and poorer compliance of taking folic acid among target population. Thus, it is advised to improve the quality of professional team in order to provide technical support which could be used to ensure the effect of folic acid intervention.
