Canine fungal skin disease is one of the commonest skin diseases in dogs, which is also a zoonotic disease infected through high contact. Clinical symptoms of canine fungal skin disease include alopecia and furfuration in partial or whole body, macula, pustule and papule, etc. Anabrosis, erosion and excoriation could also appear when secondary bacterial infection happened. The disease common occurred in young dogs or cats, physical weakness low body resistance and older dogs or cats. The incidence of canine fungal skin disease is very high and the course of the disease is very long. Although there are many antifungal drugs, few of them are satisfactory with high efficacy, low recurrence rate and few side-effects. Due to the increase of the appearance of resistant stain and the recurrence rate, finding and developing of new efficient drugs with a broad spectrum and low price become an urgent requirement of researchers. Terbinafine hydrochloride has a broad antimicrobial spectrum with strong antibacterial activity. It can topically cure most fungal skin disease, and the low recurrence rate, less side effect and high safety. The effectness of terbinafine hydrochloride liniment was evaluated in the present study. The study was designed as follows:1 Study on skin irritation of terbinafine hydrochloride linimentEight rabbits were randomly divided into two groups, namely intact skin and broken skin group. Animals were treated with terbinafine hydrochloride liniment for one single time and multiple times. The results showed that no hyperemia, oedema, degeneration and necrosis was observed grossly and microscopically, respectively on the local skin after treatment with one or multiple times, indicating no irritation to skin.2 Safety test of topical application for terbinafine hydrochloride in dogsSixteen of healthy dogs were randomly divided into 4 groups,4 dogs for each group. Animals of three groups received terbinafine hydrochloride liniment at the dosage of 150 mg·kg-1,90 mg/kg and 30 mg·kg-1, respectively. The results indicted that the blood physiological index and serum biochemical indices were not influenced by drug treatment. No toxicity or difference was found compared with control group. To evaluate the safety further, percutaneous acute toxicity test was performed on rats though fixed dosage method. After the administration of 2000 mg·kg-1 of terbinafine hydrochloride, LD50 was measured as above 2000 mg·kg-1. Target animal safety test and rat skin acute toxicity test showed that the toxicity of terbinafine hydrochloride was low, which was safe to dogs at clinical dosage recommended.3 Clinical efficacy of tebinafine hydrochloride liniment on microsporum canisIn one experiment, forty dogs with microsporum canis infection were randomly divided into four groups. Animals from three of groups received the administration of high, middle and low doses of terbinafine hydrochloride liniment. Another groups received compound ketoconazole solution as control. During the whole observing period, the total effective rate of the high and middle dose of terbinafine hydrochloride liniment was 100%, while those of compound ketoconazole solution was 90%.In another experiment, sixty dogs with microsporum canis infection were randomly divided into two groups, treated with terbinafine hydrochloride liniment and compound ketoconazole solution, respectively. The results showed that the both the curative and elimination rates of terbinafine hydrochloride liniment were 100%, while those of compound ketoconazole solution was 86.7% and 96.7%, respectively. It indicated a high curative rate and quick efficacy of terbinafine hydrochloride liniment, which is suitable for wide application in clinics.
