Safflower seed resources are rich in our country, and its by-product safflower meal after the oil removal has not been used efficiently. safflower seed and safflower meal contains rich trace elements, this research also has not caused people’s enough attention. In order to provide theoretical basis for the further development and reasonable utilization of safflower seed and its by-products. This paper studies the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) determination of trace elements content in safflower seed and its by-products, analysis contrast by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry(FAAS) method, and carried on the evaluation of uncertainty for the ICP-MS method, verified the reliability of this method. This method is rapid, simple, accurate and reliable. The recoveries ranged from95.0% to 102% and RSDs were below 3.0%. The correlation coefficients were more than0.999. It could be concluded that the method could be applied to determine eight metal elements in safflower seed and safflower meal. The results can provide new scientific basis for scientific use of safflower seed and by-product, and added the limitations of safflower seed on the trace element research.(1) The establishment of analysis methodSamples were digested by microwave, then the contents of eight metal elements in safflower seed and safflower meal were determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry determination(ICP-MS).The method is simple, rapid, less environmental pollution, accurate and reliable. It saves a lot of time compared with the flame atomic absorption method(FAAS). It can simultaneous determination of 8 kinds of trace elements.(2) Methodology validationThe establishment of the sample preparation method the digestion of sample solution after wet digestion was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometer, the determination result is consistent with the result by microwave-digestion ICP-MS method. We analyze test cabbage standard material(GBW10014) from the national standard material center that using these two methods respectively. The test results are basically identical with the reference. That proved that method is accurate and reliable.(3)The method of uncertainty evaluationIt has carried on the evaluation of uncertainty of ICP-MS method was developed for the determination of trace elements in safflower seed and its by-products. The results showed that we should pay attention to the uncertainty of the sample digestion process.(4)The trace element content in safflower seed and its by-productsThe trace elements are rich in safflower seed and safflower meal. Compared with safflower seed, Zn in safflower meal were significantly lower than that of safflower meal, other seven elements contents were slightly higher than that of safflower seed. Content of the sequence is both K>Ca>Mg >Fe>Zn>Na >Mn>Cu.
