Application Of Peony In Hunan Gardens

Peony is a famous traditional flower in China, which has been enjoying a double reputation of ornamental and medicinal use. Peony is the symbol of national prosperity and people’s happy life. With the in-depth research on Peony, it gradually appears in the eyes of the people in Hunan. However, Peony that plants in Hunan has so many problems, such as, poor growth, flower bud differentiation is incompletability, early defoliation, serious plant diseases and insect pests and so on. It’s due to the differences in their growth environment, incloud the area, soil environment and climatic conditions. This paper is based on the collection of historical records about Peony and contemporary documents, in-depth investigation in Changsha planting gardens, within the past four years’ observation on Prony in Hunan Forest Botanical Garden as well as the research for Peony Garden’s landscape design. The results are as follows:1. With the in-depth investigation in Changsha’s Peony planting gardens, the author summarizes the problems of peony growth in Changsha,such as early flowering,early leaf falling and Autumn flowers caused by high temperature, weeds grow and the high incidence of pest caused by rainy, soil compaction prones to peony roots’ diseases, and to propose the solutions of thoes problem, such as use the shelter and shade cultivation, reasonable watering and fertilization, timely tillage and weeding, integrated pest management and so on.2. Through the observation recording of peony, the author has summed tweenty suitable peony’s variety for the application and promotion in Changsha, such as ’cv. Wu Long Peng Sheng’,’cv. Ying Ri Hong’,’cv. Luo Yang Hong’,’cv. Hu Hong’,’cv. Zhu Sha Lei’,’cv. Xiang Dan’,’cv. Feng Dan’ and so on.3. Through the investigation and analysis of the typical peony’s garden in the southern region, the author summed up a comprehensive Peony Garden Landscape Design Theory. And summarized the methods and the applications in Changsha peony garden,there are Peonys, peony flower beds, peony flower border and peonys’ natural style planting.4. Hunan peony culture’ mining.
