The peony is one of China's most renowned ornamental flowers with a cultivation history spanning several thousand years. Over the centuries, this plant has become part and parcel of the Chinese culture. Many masterpieces have survived to this day, with the peony as the central theme. Symbolizing prosperity and good fortune, the peony is used widely as a gardening plant. Its image is widely portrayed in sculptures, paintings, literatures, and fashion designs. The plant is also used in Chinese cuisine and medicine.This paper describes an ethnobotanical study of the peony. By the plants and flower culture as the background, and use historical development of peony culture as vertical clue and compares horizontally for the forms of expression to discuss.1. A brief description is given of the formation and development of Chinese flower culture and peony culture. By an analysis which on the origin of peony cultivation and development of peony culture has been discussed. By reviewing historical literature and the retrospective history of peony cultivation, I provide new insights into the origin and spread of peony cultivation.2. The peony culture manifests in diverse forms including myths, legends, poems, paintings, ikebana, decorations, and folk customs. Of these, poems and arts are the most influential. This rich cultural background lends credence to the peony's candidacy as the national flower of China.3. The study discusses ancient garden and modern landscaping designs incorporating the peony theme. Peonies can be found in imperial gardens, temples, and private homes in singles, clusters, belts and a number of other application forms, creating many fascinating sceneries in conjunction with other ornamental plants, architectural items, and artificial land features.4. Ancient tree peonies are culturally and biologically important. This study combines data from field investigations and literatures, creating a comprehensive summary of wild peony resources in China.5. Much of the peony's economic potential remains unexploited. This study offers suggestions regarding peony tourism, cuisine, medicine, and seedling production.Chinese flower culture came down in one continuous line with the plant culture and the traditional culture. By studying the Chinese peony culture thoroughly, it aims at introducing the important role of the peony in Chinese culture, and carrying forward the Chinese traditional culture of garden plants.
