Farm land is decreasing due to urban expansion and industrialization while fooddemand is increasing because of population explosion. Meanwhile, food safetyproblemsare getting worse as the environment pollution and inappropriate use ofpesticides and fertilizers in traditional farming. Vertical agriculture is a new way tosolve all these problems. The purpose of this study is to make use of the urban roof toproduce safe and nutritious vegetables by hydroponics: set up a screen house on theroof; build hydroponic facilities that are clean and easy to handle; produce leafyvegetables without using of any miry substrates. Pesticide can be avoided in roofscreen house under proper maintenance. All heavy metals tested in hydroponicvegetables are well below the maximum limited level (MRL) and the vitamin C andmineral levels are significantly higher compared with those in soil cultured vegetables.Their insoluble dietary fiber content is lower; however, it means better taste.Forty-nineChinese flowering cabbage and forty-nine lettuce samples from marketswere tested for contaminants content. Results showed even organic and greenvegetables have excessive lead or arsenic content. About half of the Chineseflowering cabbages have nitrate content over MRL. One common and one greenChinese flowering cabbage show strong positive in the test for organophosphate andcarbamate pesticide residues. Besides, we found roof agriculture can be profitable, especially when operated in larger scale. In all, our research indicates that using urbanroof to produce safe and nutritious vegetables in a clean and hydroponic way isfeasible and likely to be accepted by the general public. This study aim to get highquality hydroponic vegetable with low cost and provide some data to further reseachof roof agriculture.
