In the design of potato digger separation devices, the traditional mechanical designing methods are adopted at home and abroad, while the methods do not fully consider the characteristics of the soil and the mixture of potato and soil, as well as the basic requirements for the separation of potato and soil. In order to study the potatoes* motion characteristics in potato soil separation processes on the potato diggers separation screen, improve the performance of potato digger separation screen, increase the efficiency of the separation of potato and soil, reduce the potato damage caused by potato diggers during the harvesting process. Kexin 1 potato is chosen as the research object, laboratory tests and tested in the field in the paper, and using the the movement theory, analysis to verify the test results.While for the laboratory tests, firstly adjusting the separating screen angle, setting an electric motor output shaft speed with the inverter, after the functioning stable of potatoes excavator, placing the spherical and ellipsoidal potato on the elevator chain which is rotating-stable,then using the infrared high speed camera system to acquire the data of the potato movement when they are on the separate screen.Processing the collected image data, drawing the acceleration and time characteristic curves of two types of potatoes on the different separating screen angles. Through the investigation of laboratory experiments about the influence of the soil on separation of potato and soil, combining with the analysis of characteristic curves and the movement theory. we obtain the potatoes motion characteristics on the separation sieve.While for the tested in the field, before the tests, weeding and seeding treatments were performed with the experimental plots, so as not to affect the tests’results. Each of representatively approximate spherical and ellipsoidal potato is selected in the field and wrapping around two potatoes with the black tape as the testing objects of the field trials. During the experiment, the two experiments potatoes were embedded in the forthcoming digging soil, adjusting the angle of separation screen surface, after the stability of excayato, the video camera is moving as the same as the speed of the tractor, and using the infrared high-speed camera system to acquire the data of the potato movement when they are on the separate screen. High-speed cameras analysis software (TEMA) is used to process the collected images data, drawing the horizontal acceleration and the vertical acceleration and time characteristic curves of spherical and ellipsoidal potatoes on the different separating screen angles. Through analysising the characteristic curves, we obtained the tests’data, and then get the average value of the tests’results. Contrast the laboratory tests, summed up the movement of two types of potatoes on the different screen surface inclination. Providing the reference on technical improvement and optimization for further study of dynamic characteristics of potatoes and potato excavators.
