Savoy is a mutation from subspecies cabbage of Cruciferae, originating from China, which owes nearly thousands years of cultivation history. As one of the special local vegetable varieties in yangtze river basin, the cultivation areas of savoy are increasingly widespread and its development value is drawn more and more domestic and foreign breeding territories attention. Since the 1980’s, the relevant units and seed companies have been starting the savoy breeding work. However, savoy cross breeding for new varieties is much difficult and currently on the market is still dominated by conventional varieties. These conventional varieties exist many problems, such as poor uniformity, severely degraded, low resistance to disease and so on. At present, the reports on research of savoy in domestic and foreign are mainly focus on the summaries of cultivation techniques, analysis of agronomic characters, yield components and seed yield of per plant, and the studies on the breeding are relatively so few, production and breeding research lags far behind current situation, which impact the industrial development of savoy. Therefore, it is urgent for domestic savoy industry to breeding out the new hybrid varieties with high uniformity, good characters and strong resistance.The present research worked on sprouting savoy variety collecting, classifying,evaluating and purifying. Hybrid combinations were compared through zone trial and demonstration. One new sprouting savoy hybrid eultivar was gained and the planting skills were also studied. The new cultivar was spread to Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Sanxi, Jiangsu and several provinces. For determination of combining ability and economic characters identification,good economic and social benefits were achieved. The main results were as follows:eighteen self-incompatible lines were gained from observating and evaluating of three hundred and twenty eight savoy materials. A new hybrid of savoy cultivar,’Huiwu 4’was gained through hybrid combination and cultivars comparison.It is determined that "HuaiWu4" is the moderately cold tolerance variety after a data comparison through the cold tolerance determination of five varieties, they are "HuaiWu4", male parent w9803-3, female parent W9804-7, the "HuaiWul" which is a cold tolerance variety (could tolerance-8℃) and "Tadi Wu3" which is a cold intolerance variety.By the research on "HuaiWu4"including sowing date, transplanting seedling age, fertilization, disease resistance and other tests, the results shows that:the best sowing date is mid-august to late september in Hefei area; the best transplanting seedling age is between 20d to 30d; it is most conducive to the growth and development of "HuaiWu4" when combined use of organic manure and NPK fertilizer; and "HuaiWu4" is the moderately disease resistance varieties.On the summer green body-hypothermia-vernalization test of "HuaiWu4", we get the best vernalization temperature and time that making the seed production time (one generation per year) can be shortened to two generations a year, which accelerates the speed of the stock breeding.
