Zelkova sinica Schneid is a rare native tree species in Shanxi. Study on overwintering and physiological characteristics of cold hardiness of Zelkova sinica seedlings is important to grow and use the tree seedlings in landscaping. In this experiment, overwintering and physiological characteristics of cold hardiness of Zelkova sinica seedlings were studied using field observation and physiological index determination methods. Growth of the seedlings was measured as well in this study. The results showed:1.The average height and diameter of the one-year-old Zelkova sinica seedlings were112.2cm and1.58cm respectively. The average height of and diameter of the one-year-old grafted seedlings were199.0cm and1.70cm respectively. The seedings grew faster during Augst and Septemper and stopped growing in October. Seedling stubble could promote the growth of Zelkova sinica seedlings. The height and diameter of the stumped seedlings were greater than the non-stumped.seedlings.2.Frost damage of one-year-old Zelkova sinica seedlings was greater than the two-year-old ones, while the three-year-old seedlings could overwinter safely. The cold resistance of different one-year-old seedlings was:grafted seedlings> non-transplanted seedings> transplanted seedlings.3.The results of peroxidase activity (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), conductivity meter method and malondialdehyde (MDA) indicated that the cold resistance of different one-year-old seedlings was: grafted seedlings> non-transplanted seedings> transplanted seedlings.
