Franchising originated from the sewing machine industry in the United States, and it has evolved into a multi-sector, market-oriented, international mature system after nearly a century. In the 1950 s, franchising was used in the hospitality industry with a rapid pace of growing, and now franchising has become the most popular way for expansion in international hospitality industry. Since the 80’s in last century, domestic hospitality industry began to develop quickly. Until the end of 1990 s, international hotel groups just began to unfold the practice of franchising, after the step of it, domestic hotels started to develop franchising. From then on, domestic hotel franchising began to emerge gradually.Among the business models in domestic hospitality industry, economy hotels are used to franchising, while mid & up-scale hotels tend to hotel management contracts, so the level of mid & up-scale hotel franchising is far less than western countries. But in recent years, as management contracts increasingly appear apparent drawbacks, termination of hotel owners and management groups occurs frequently. Under this circumstance, hotel owners and management groups are constantly adjusting the business model, more and more mid & up-scale hotels turn to enlarge the proportion of franchising, which provides an opportunity for further expansion of mid & up-scale hotel franchising.Based on the above, this article aims to make a research on the development of domestic mid & up-scale hotel franchising under the background of international popular hotel franchising. The paper will analyze the situation and prospect of mid & up-scale hotel franchising, and explore the influence factors of hotel franchising, so as to extract key influence factors to give some useful suggestions for the further development of domestic mid & up-scale hotel franchising. This article is processing with six chapters and the content is as following:The first chapter is the introduction part which provides the background, the purpose and significance, research method and technology roadmap.The second chapter is related literatures review and basic theories. Through the summary of related literatures at home and aboard, this article explains the definition, characteristics and types of franchising, then focuses on the definition of hotel franchising. At the same time, this article describes the other major business models in hospitality industry.The third chapter elaborates the develop situation of hotel industry both at home and abroad.The fourth chapter explains the prospect of domestic mid & up-scale hotel franchising from three aspects. First is the external environment of domestic franchising, then is the comparative analysis between franchising and other hotel business model, last is the comparative advantages of hotel franchising.The fifth chapter is the empirical research on influence factors of domestic mid & up-scale hotel franchising. Under a brief analysis of relevant factors, the writer conducts a questionnaire survey, and analyzes the results via SPSS software, categorizing the key factors of hotel franchising. At last, the writer takes two successful examples to give some suggestions for the further development of domestic mid & up-scale hotel franchising.The final chapter includes conclusion and prospect, consisting of the main research results and future research direction in the field.
