Headhunter, ten years ago seemed to be a mysterious word to most people. Many people knew nothing about what was headhunter and what they did. With the dynamic economic development in China in recent ten years, headhunting industry is booming, which is no longer an unknown term for most professionals. Nowadays, there are thousands of headhunting firms in tier 1 cities, like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, which results in a fierce competition in the market. There are also a lot of small recruiting firms in tier 2 city. Approximately there are some new comers in the market each day, while some quit. On one hand lots of Managers and Consultants of headhunting firm feel hard to survive and develop in the market; on the other hand, many clients complain that they fail to find the excellent recruiting partner. Years ago headhunting service was mainly accepted by foreign company. With the growing sense of talent, China’s private firm starts to cooperate with headhunter. Consequently, the author believes that there is great potential in China’s headhunting market, especially in the current market of tier 2 city. However, the managers of headhunting firms in tier 2 cities should think about how to analyze the market environment and seize the opportunity to create own competition advantage.Nanjing as a tier 2 city, no first level recruiting firm has the intention of entering the market. When talking about the recruiting market in Nanjing, both the Consultants in Shanghai market and the Consultants in Nanjing market have negative comments on Nanjing market capacity. When almost everyone has a negative view about Nanjing market, the author, as the first staff, joined the Nanjing branch office of a foreign recruiting firm in Feb 2011 and achieved impressive achievements in the past 3 years-passed probation in shortest time in China offices and got promotion, lead the core team Manufacturing and SCM after 10 months in the company, developed Finance & HR team after 16 months, set up Industrial Sales & Marketing team after 22 months, achieved successive revenue increase in the past 3 years, achieved 19% increase in annual net income in 2013 even the macro economy was not that promising, which was the only one office in 2013 achieved net income increase compared with net income in 2012. Why could the author achieve such a success in a market which is never put a high value by competitors? The core reason lies in the selection and implementation of focus strategy without any doubt. By making the research of Michael Porter’s competition model and focus strategy, analyzing the competition situation in Nanjing market, the author identified the opportunity and threatens for the company, the strengths and weakness of the company. Based on a thorough understanding of the business process, the author made the choice of focus strategy and clarified the definition of the focused target market in three dimensions. In conjunction with the management a series of standard operation process and supervise of key performance indicators, the strategy is realized in business by the operational methodology. By the strategic choice and implementation of strategy in Nanjing X Recruiting Firm, the paper is of great importance for the recruiting counterparts on how to analyze their strengths, seize the opportunity and avoid threats, development their competitive advantages.
