The design of high-rise office building surfaces is a problem that architects and engineers have been focusing on. When designing a office tower surface, not only should its aesthetic values to the city environment be taken into account, but also its public functions in the city should be concerned. The development of office tower surfaces should be harmonious with culture, time, city environment and human beings. However, office tower surfaces’ tendency of becoming huger has affected the original city surfaces and the single design of some office tower surface has led to people’s aesthetic fatigue. As a result, it is essential to solve problems that the development of office tower surfaces brought to city surfaces. Also, the office tower surfaces themselves bear contradictions and complexities. Thus, in this paper, “Middle Realm” theory raised by Kisho Kurokawa has been introduced into researches on the design of office tower surfaces, in the hope that city cultures could be extended, urban vitality be activated and city order be maintained. Therefore, this paper, firstly, carried out researches on the styles, the shapes, the structures and the development of surfaces facing street of office tower surfaces, getting the conclusion that office tower surfaces developed diversely and complexly under various external forces from environment. Secondly, the enlightenment obtained from researches relevant to “Middle Realm” theory has been used in this paper to explore the relationship between the theory itself and office tower surfaces and manifestation mode of four designs: annotation, fractal, coillustration and ambiguity, have been got. Finally, Kisho Kurokawa’s case has been analyzed in this paper and its research approaches has been constructed. According to it, a developmental research and analysis has been carried out on typical cases of cities, enterprises and benchmarks over times, as a result of which “Middle Realm” theory is proved to be suitable for the styles, the shapes, the structures and the ambiguity as well as emptiness of office tower surfaces. Under the condition that takes these four features into consideration, design strategies based on office tower surfaces are put forward in the paper, which laid a foundation for styles of multidimensional intentions, for proper and moderate shapes, for structures of rhythmic replacement and for ambiguity as well as emptiness of open atmosphere. At the end of the paper, the ideas proposed are applied to the design of “No.6 Project of Pengcheng Road”.Thus, it can be seen that the design of high-rise office building surfaces based on “Middle Realm” theory aims at stimulating high-rise office building surfaces with diverse contradictions to activate the vitality that coexists with cities; at demonstrating features of high-rise office building surfaces and making it be harmonious with the development of cities; and at manifesting the sense of drama as well as enjoyment after the interpretation of the culture and time.
