In early 2013, "Chieftain Historical Site" consisting of Hailongdun Site in Zunyi, Guizhou, Laosicheng Site in Yongshun, Hunan, and Tangya Chieftain Site in Xianfeng, Hubei has been identified as a project to declare the World Heritage in 2015. Because of this significant news, people pay more attention to Chieftain Historical Site than ever. Currently, most of existing regulations related to site protection focus on protection of sites, however, a very few regulations mention of researching and protecting the network system of cities where sites located in. Therefore, the main topic of this thesis is the urban construction under the chieftain system in south-west China, and explain urban construction from three aspects:cities’ network system, distribution of cities and spatial distribution inner cities. This paper is trying to find out the relationship between the Chieftain system and the urban construction, which could provide a theoretical foundation for constructing a characteristic historical culture network in south-west China later.The paper will divide into three parts. Firstly, as the background of this research, a general overview of the history and formation the Chieftain System will be introduced, then a comparison of the chieftain system and the feudal system will be given, and a brief explanation of official system and spatial distribution under chieftain system in south-west China will be followed.Second part of this paper will take the Bozhou City before the Pingbo Battle in Ming as an example, use the method of historical information deduction to deduce the spatial framework of Bozhou, Laocheng in Zunyi, and Hailongtun before the Pingbo Battle in Ming. Based on the spatial framework, the landscape environment and traffic network, as well as the distribution of administrative, economic, cultural and military areas in Bozhou will be explained in detail. Moreover, the background and characters of site selection, the overall and inner spatial distribution in Laocheng, Zunyi and Hailongtun will be analyzed.Lastly, as a conclusion, this paper will present the relationship between the chieftain system and urban construction. The urban construction of Bozhou has been improved under the chieftain system, and the construction of Bozhou has relatively dependence, peculiarity and defensive.
