With the acceleration of urbanization and construction of power network of both urban and rural areas, the scale of power system is becoming larger and larger, which means that electrical power corporations need to manage huge amounts of data of electrical power devices. At the same time, power system, especially distribution network, as a very important link of power system, shows an obvious feature of geographical distribution. Distribution network is a significant part of power system, in which various information is closely tied to geography environment. As a result, conventional information processing technology is not able to tackle the operation and management of distribution network well. In this case, establish a GIS (Geographical Information System) for distribution network, considering the feature of devices, network, production and management of distribution network, is a very important method to advance the security and the management level of power system, having profound significance to raise operation efficiency of distribution network.The research works of this thesis are summarized as follows:Firstly, the thesis introduces the problems which occur when managing distribution networks, the research status and trends of distribution network management. In view of main problems of distribution network management, the thesis analyzes the significance of applying GIS into distribution network and implementing distribution network automation. Secondly, the basic functions and features of GIS are analyzed, and a detailed and comprehensive research is done to study the application of GIS into distribution network, including the designing and development progress of distribution network GIS as well as some relevant techniques, based on MapInfo platform. A developing method by using MapX platform and Delphi tool to develop the distribution network GIS is proposed. Then, based on the current status of the distribution network of Jingjiang, the scheme of a distribution network GIS is proposed, and the function module and database of Jingjiang distribution network GIS system is designed and developed. Lastly, a test is done toward the designed distribution network GIS system.The test results and the operation of the developed system prove that applying advanced GIS system to distribution network management provides an advanced graphical management tool for electrical power corporation to manage power devices and decide policy, and at the same time helps to increase the reliability and power quality of power supply as well as economical operation of the distribution network.
