Combination of wood and steel for contemporary small house is of growing trend in the developed countries’ communities. In developing countries, the rural community accounts for the majority of the population yet they live in very poorly built houses. Proper approach to rural housing is inevitable if one has to deal with a system with the majority not being at the disadvantage. Despite Tanzania abundance of forest and different species of trees, there is growing importation of most building materials for the construction of modern houses.Lack of knowledge on locally available materials has hindered the process of delivering decent houses to majority of people. Over ambition of the use of modern construction materials has led to prolonged house construction and unbearable costs in terms of money and time. The motive of this paper is to look in depth the use of wood as the traditional housing material and the causes of its diminished use in a modern house construction, as well as how can the wood be regarded as one of the best material to build a house. Also the paper will look in the combination of wood and steel for contemporary small house, as is a growing trend in the developed countries’ communities. For the benefit my country Tanzania, this paper focuses on ways to assess the effectiveness of wood and on how steel could be used to perfect the wooden house to provide a modern and decent shelter to the low-come and middle-income communities and to understand methods and technologies available and expression of these materials from architectural and technological point of view. This dissertation met these research aims through an extensive study of relevant literature and case studies on the traditional timber building and in the modern era on the most successful wooden private houses and public buildings. It then produced a number of key findings: modern technology on wood as housing material assures a significant increase of wood made products and their impact on creating beautiful habitable atmosphere within the house and the entire community but also the challenges of general technical knowledge and appreciation of these materials by the society. The main conclusions drawn from this research are that current approaches in designs of houses are deficient because they fail to embrace regionalism approach, instead opting for easily expensive available materials and sharing of technical knowledge between construction stakeholders at local, national and international level has hindered the appreciation of these materials, as are the basic ones for building houses. This research argues for inclusion of local available materials studies inclusion in architecture studies and architects should pay first consideration to local material starting with wood. Through proper assessment and intensive researches, the need for global support in wooden products in facilitating proper housing for local communities.
