With the accelerating process of urbanization, the number of skyscrapers is increasing rapidly in China. High-rise office buildings take up a greater proportions in it.High-rise office buildings often undertake very important functions and responsibilities in the economic development of a city. The public space, as the main part of high-rise office buildings, plays an important role in it. The public space links up high-rise office building’s own functions and connects the architectural and urban system as well. This is not only crucial to realize the integration of respective function, but also to achieve the coordination of high-rise office buildings and cities. Public space can be used as a space for communication and rest, which can regulate the users’ psychology and provide comfortable environment for them as well.This thesis analyses the public space of high-rise office buildings, from the viewpoint of urban design and architectural design, combining with examples, studies and summarizes the design principles and design methods of the public space of skyscrapers. By selecting living examples that have been built as the main research object, according to different functions, the public space is divided into several parts: entrance & exit, first-floor lobby space, underground lobby space, sky lobby space, atrium space, corridor space and outdoor space and then it elaborates on the behavior, function and design method of the different unit in the public space. This thesis also discusses the relationship between the organizational logic and core-tube type. And on the basis of different organizational methods, the public space of high-rise office buildings can be classified into three types: core barrel, atrium and sky lobby system.Finally, it summarizes the status quo of the public space in high-rise office building, its design principles, and future development.
