Old towns own rich splendid historical heritages, representing the local culture, features and long-history of each city. Since 1990 s, Old Town has become a hot spot in the city, which turn into an important criteria to be selected as the most influential historical ones. A lot of academic and practical explorations have been carried out in this field. There is no lack of excellent cases, such as "new world" in Shanghai, Wuzhen in Tongxiang, “South Pool" in Beijing "Tong Fang Xiang" in Suzhou and the "Three Alleys and Seven Fanes" in Fuzhou, etc. However, failure cases are also existed. Some of the old towns are removed from cities, the newly-built makes them become European style communities. The same architectural modeling and features lost the in-depth of the original culture. The main purpose of this paper is to deepen the understanding of urban context, and explores the traditional hakka culture, so as to realize urban renewal and reconstruction combined with hakka traditional culture. The thesis contains five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background and purpose, describes the overall research situation on urban context either in domestic or overseas. In chapter two, the paper investigates the essence and connotation of the urban context, focus on the present situation of the old town transformation and the nationwide historical heritage protection theory. List the emergency and development of the international protection theory, which has been divided into several factions, such as Stylistic restoration, anti-restoration, scientific restoration and organic renewal. The international and domestic laws and regulations are also studied in this chapter. In the third chapter, study the hakka traditional culture in Minxi region at first, uncover the local social custom of hakka clan and traditional architecture; analyze the reasons of the decline on hakka traditional culture in the contemporary society. And then figure out the applications of hakka traditional culture within contemporary design.Chapter four accesses the overall development of Shanghang region, research on its historical changes, spatial morphology, land use, construction quality, traffic conditions, historical heritage and other aspects at WaZi street, so as to obtain the problems that need to be solved there.Base on the previous analysis, a real-life case is carried out as an example in chapter five. Combining with my experience in renovation at the core area of WaZi Street, it discusses the protection principles, landscape design in the continuation of hakka traditional culture, and also locates the problems that need to be aware of while doing constructions. In conclusion, the paper presents findings that WaZi Street is important historical heritage and cradle of ShangHang area, but the protection is far not enough. As the rapid development in urban regions, they are still confronted with the threat of demolition. Therefore, sufficient research and consideration should be done before making conservation; otherwise it would be difficult to establish effective protection measures and to continue the local traditional culture. In terms of historical heritage protection, people should pay attention to the combination of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, integrated the whole protection together.
