As the representative of the ancient Chinese large timber frame construction, the Beam lifted frame and Through type frame occupy very important position in the history of ancient Chinese architecture. Beam lifted frame is widely used in large construction of palaces, temples and so on, Through type frame is very common in the southern states. So far many studies think that the two types of timber frame with good mechanical properties.In order to explore the mechanical properties of Beam lifted and Through type timber frame. According to the record of historical literature, based on the Ming and qing dynasties’ Beam lifted and Through type timber frame as the prototype, test model determined by the structure of the actual stress distribution, and according to the requirements of Gongcheng Zuofa of Qing Dynasty and nanpu hall measured data, made two timber frame model with 1:76 scale.The mortise and tenon joints of timber frame model used the recording method of Mr Ma Bingjian’s "Chinese ancient wooden building technology", according to the ancient timber frame’s column base and the connection condition, the boundary conditions of the specimens and the loading method has carried on the reasonable assumption,and test the monotonic loading mechanics performance the two timber frame model. Test phenomena show the main form of damages to the timber frame model is the joints are failure in the form of the pulling out of tenon from mortise, the beam and column deformation is small, no compression damage; under the horizontal monotonic load, the pulling out length, rotation of the tenons increased with the increase of displacement control, Beam lifted and Through type timber frame have a good ability of deformation, and with better overall performance, Through type timber frame is better than Beam lifted type frame. Through the analysis of timber frame load-displacement curve, determine the timber frame’s peak load, ultimate displacement, etc. Under the same load displacement, Beam lifted type reached the peak load quicker.According to the large-scale finite element analysis software ABAQUS12.0, and do the analysis of the two timber frame. Mortise and tenon joints are replaced by joining the connector element to simulate the semi-rigid characteristics of timber frame, mortise and tenon joints’ parameters of semi-rigid joint using the existing research results, And obtain the whole deformation figure, the mortise, tenon joints’ rotation internal force with load displacement’s change. Through the simulation results of load - displacement curve compared with the test results, ABAQUS simulation with high calculation precision.And from the simulation results, obtain the mortise and tenon joints’ yield order and compared the two kinds of timber frame yielding difference. Compared with the test results, this paper argues that "the ancient timber structure technical specification for maintenance and reinforcementl" dim the damaged timber frame lateral boundaries is too conservative, this article will carry the damaged beam timber frame point defined beam lifted frame as 160 mm, throught type frame as 200 mm.According to the test phenomena and finite element simulation results, analyzed these two kinds of timber frame in theory, through simplifying roof, and part of mortise and tenon joints assumed articulated, so obtained the general timber frame for the simplified analysis model, and analysis derived timber frame lateral stiffness, deduced different beam element equation of rotation - displacement, and the calculation of column length, analysised the second order effects caused by vertical load and the elastic-plastic analysis was carried out on the timber parts.Through the static test research of Ming and qing timber frame and finite element analysis, experimental and theoretical data analysis results have theoretical significance and practical value in engineering.
