With the development of the modern industrial production technology, the requirement of the detection is also increased. The leak testing of the sealed container as an important detection plays an increasingly important role in ensuring the quality of products. The intake manifold is the key component of the vehicle, its quality directly affects the stability and reliability of the engine. At present, the tightness testing is the key processes of the intake manifold.The intake manifold of the automobile engine was studied in the paper. Using the leak detector, we design a leak detection devices based on the PLC technology. We test the air tightness of the intake manifold before installing it. It can effectively prevent the unqualified intake manifold fitted to the engine. So that the quality of the engine can be guaranteed reliably.The detection device of the leak includes two clamping processes. They are sealing and testing. This paper analyzes the overall designs of leak detection device, they are the mechanical design of the leak detection device, control system and software. The mechanical design includes the test bench and the electrical cabinets, and the test bench is designed according to the shape of the workpiece, in order to save the space and easy to install. In the pinch seal process, because of the safety requirements of the leak testing, the design uses the PID control method. the speed of the cylinder is controlled by controlling the pressure of the gas, so that we make the cylinder’s speed is in the best condition to closure. It makes the safety was guaranteed, and also make the production to the highest efficiency. The MATLAB simulation is used in the design, and the parameters of the PID module was determined by it. The shortcomings that repeatedly modify the parameters and repeatedly run the test in the method of trial and error is greatly reduced. And we complete the design of the gas path and electrical, the writing and debugging of the programs of the detection device. And the practical problems that encountered during the commissioning are also solved. The equipment is used for the actual production process, and it is favorable by the users.
