In recent years, with the comprehensive speed increase on China’s railway, the role of global system for mobile communications–railway(GSM-R) is becoming more and more important, and the investment of construction funds is also increasing rapidly. The design of a GSM-R includes mobile communication base station location, traffic estimation, frequency planning, etc. The base station location is related to the overall situation and so plays an important role in mobile network planning. At present, because the base station construction costs involve a number of professional factors, the domestic GSM-R design only focus on their own professional goals and costs, not on the consideration of global optimization.Based on the analysis of the cost components of the GSM-R, this paper establishes mathematical programming models with the goal of minimizing total construction cost and the number of station to optimize the base station location. By investigation, the relevant data of a sample railway is obtained, and applies it to the models to get the optimal solutions. Compared with the existing scheme, the results show that the design based on the models in this paper can not only reduce the cost and difficulty, but also improve the quality and efficiency of the design. The model and optimization method presented in this paper have important reference value for the design of wireless communication systems in Metro and high speed railway. In this paper, the first chapter briefly introduces the background and the structure of GSM-R system, as well as the significance of base station location. The second chapter introduces the GSM-R base station subsystem and some common location models. In the third chapter, the base station location optimization model with the goal of minimizing the total construction cost and the number of base stations is established. In the fourth chapter, the optimization model is applied to an example, and the optimal solution is obtained and the general conclusion is obtained. The fifth chapter puts forward some problems of the follow-up study which as the summary of the work of this paper.
