Based on the resources and environment problems that human face, the concept of sustainable design is proposed. As an industry that has high energy consumption and pollution, architecture plays an important role in human’s sustainable development. The separation of architectural skin and load-carrying structure enables the appearance of buildings to be designed freely. Architectural composite skin achieves many new functions by the breakthrough of concept, material and technology. Now architectural composite skin is not only one of the most vigorous public interface, but also makes a great contribution to the environment and resources protection.Although a large number of buildings with composite skin have been built, there are little researches on them with data analysis. In my opinion, excellent architects should not only implement sustainable design strategies during design period, but also need to use some technical methods to analysis the built environment afterwards. Data analysis based on software simulation and actual measurement can be well fed back to the generation of design strategies. Admittedly, research on a specific case can hardly draw a universal conclusion. But the accumulation of data is necessary basement of deeper research on this field. Therefore, this paper will use this way to do research, hoping to contribute certain amount of data to the research on the application of architectural composite skin and explore the significance of architectural composite skin in South China.Firstly, the paper use some cases to illustrate the sustainable design strategies of architectural composite skin, including regional culture strategy, ecological construction strategy and climate adaptation strategy. Then combined with the feature of climate in South China to demonstrate the climate adaptation strategy. Based on the theory research, the writer selected a practical participant project—Guangzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Center to do deeper research, which included the application of sustainable design strategies during design period, valuation of climate adaptation through software simulation and data analysis of actual measurement after construction. The main conclusions include: Sustainable design strategies are the main impetus of the design process and the final scheme was due to the balance of different factors. Through the results of software simulation, it was proved that composite skin was beneficial for sunshade in this project but there still be some problems in lighting. With the actual measurement of the built environment, the valuation of lighting is more objective. Overall, this paper provides systematic methods of sustainable architectural composite skin design, including the comparison analysis of different skin materials in terms of their physical properties, structure design, and visual expression. Software simulation and actual measurement are quantitative methods that help improve the design.
