Research On The Pattern Of The Traditional Fort-type Settlement Of Duan Village In Pingyao

In ancient time, a large number of fort-type settlements integrated live and defense were built with frequent change of dynasties and turbulent society situation. As a model of forts in Pingyao, Duan village has been paid attention to research for its numerous quantity, grand scale and complete defense system.Under the background of rapid urbanization and industrialization in China, Duan village can more fully reflect the form of space and cultural connotation of forts with most of its traditional buildings being intact, which is very valuable.Based on collecting information, referring to historical data, field survey and field mapping the paper outlined firstly Duan village’s physical geography,man history and folk customs, combed the time when each fort was constructed,dissected the location layout and the pattern characteristics of the village, and focused on extracting and analyzing the space elements of these forts. Then the thesis dissected the construction of defense system of the village from the two aspects of physical and mental defense, and according to the differences to other places’ forts, the regional style that Duan village reflected was summarized.Then it made a general overview on the architecture of Duan village. Accordingto different connection means of courtyards, it classified the dwellings, and selected several typical dwellings as samples to analyze. Finally, the main components of the dwellings were discussed respectively from function and form. According to the difference of materials, the building decoration art was analyzed from stone carving, wood carving and brick carving, some plaques were appreciated at the same time.Fort-type settlements are complex products of society. The formation of Duan village was impacted not only by the age of turbulence and the local economic situation, but also by the factors such as folk belief, habits and customs, popular aesthetic, technology and technique, which can provide rare samples for the research on the vernacular architecture of traditional village even the life of rural social in Jinzhong since Qing dynasty from architecture,sociology and history.
