As major roadbuilding material of freeway and urban road, mineral mixture could directly influence quality of the road surface. One important factor when evaluating the mineral mixture is the gradation of mineral mixture, which not only impacts the pavement performance of mineral mixture, but serves as a commonly used indicator of the construction quality of bituminous pavement. However, the conventional detection method of gradation is both time- and energy-consuming, and might be faulty when locating problems and problem-solving. Therefore it is urgently needed to develop a new method that automatically and rapidly detects and analyses the gradation of mineral mixture. This thesis mainly focuses on an image-processing based detection method of mineral mixture gradation. This method was based on real-time detection of various silos, analyzing various parameters, such as particle size, angularity, textural features profiles and size distribution of aggregate at the same grade. This method also evaluated synthesis gradation of the mixture and aggregate specifications of each silos and compared the results with the designed values, giving a real-time alarm when the gradation is out of limits. Following parts will be further addressed in this thesis:First of all, the description of mineral mixture gradation and plotting of grading curve were studied. And gradation theory of mineral mixture was discussed.Secondly, real-time calculation of gradation through analysis of images of mineral mixture was developed and the differences between values obtained and designed were collected and analysed. In addition, various description of aggregate specifications was comprehensively discussed.Thirdly, Visual C++ 6.0 combined with SQL Server 2005 was selected as system development environment according to feasibility study and demand analysis of the target system. Structure and execution flow of the system were carefully designed and database design and functional modules based on Visual C++ 6.0 would be discussed in details as well in the thesis. Finally, with the combination of black-box test and white-box test, the system was systematically tested. Results showed that targets previously set had been successfully achieved and the system was ready for use.To sum up, the real-time detection system of mineral mixture gradation designed in this thesis is able to fulfill real-time detection and graphical showing of mineral mixture gradation, statistical analysis and storage of gradation data and real-time alarm. In addition, this method could serve as a promising approach to monitoring the process automatically and accurately, thereby improving the manufacture efficiency in the long run.
