For a long time, fluorescents and tungsten have been the two main means of decorative lighting in space vehicles. That is, until the International Space Station developed a metallic halogen light as an illumination source. This new light source was created to meet the requirements of camera lighting on the exterior of the station. This paper introduces a new type of product design program of solid-state lighting, that meets the flood lighting requirements for the exterior of the spacecraft. This solution solves the application problems of rigor environment in space by detailed product design using white high light LED(Light Emitting Diode), as the light source of the system. The main content contains the following main points:1) The paper briefly introduces the history of man made electrical lighting sources, specifically on the development of the LED, as well as the general background of the domestic and international research of Solid-state lighting devices. Furthermore, the paper introduces background requirements of the study according to the current development situation of lighting technology used outside of the spacecraft.2) The paper will establish a theoretical and practical foundation for the product design of solid-state lighting using LED as a lighting source by describing several aspects, chiefly:characteristics of PN junction of semiconductor materials, hetero-structure and quantum well, basic structure of high brightness light LED, and luminous mechanism of high brightness white LED.3) The paper proposes introducing product design index requirements of Solid-state lighting in spacecraft. According to the index, the systematic design of products, light-source design, optical system design, circuit design, thermal design and structural design are all completed. The entire design process draws from successful experience in how aerospace products were designed, and all design objectives adhere to the specifications of the technical index.4) All the results of the optical design, structural design, and thermal design are verified by computer simulation to test the rationality and validity of the results by using professional simulation software like Tracepro and Ansys. Based on this, the practicability of the design results can be further verified by taking advantage of the authenticating product for environmental routine test.
