In today’s society, we have an ever-bigger demand for electric energy. Therefore, it’s particularly important to ensure the safe operation of the power resources. As the main way to transmit electric energy, the transmission line will inevitably cause huge economic losses when electricity can’t be transmitted due to component failure. Therefore, the safe and reliable operation of transmission line holds the key to stability of electric power transmission, which requires fault detection and diagnosis of the transmission line and its parts.This paper used the failure mode for effects analysis to define the system of transmission line. Also, this paper introduced in detail the failure mode of the parts of transmission lines, operation status and inspection methods, which provides a theoretical basis for fault diagnosis and forecasting of the transmission line; Secondly, this paper studied fault diagnosis methods of transmission line under the data collected from small samples. By using three different algorithms and improving the algorithm of the particle swarm, this paper optimized the model parameters of the classifier and then verified the superiority of the improved particle swarm algorithm through the simulation experiments; thirdly, this paper put forward the dynamic bayesian network prediction method based on data extension. Prediction model was established with a transformation from dynamic bayesian networks to hidden markov model. Also, the prediction model was modified to reduce the errors caused by the correlation between the nodes accumulated in the prediction model with an increased amount of data and more complicated correlation between nodes. In this way, the prediction accuracy of the model can be improved; finally, fault diagnosis system of the transmission line was established to make evaluations of the operation of the transmission line based on the acquired data, and to make predictions of potential faults of the transmission line. In this way, the weak links of the transmission line can be exposed and the maintenance of the inspection team can be more targeted.
