As China’s power system has stepped into the age of large grid, large capacity unit and ultra-high voltage and the progress of economic development of China is hinged on the efficiency of power supply, ensuring sound supply of power has become one of the hot issues to be addressed by the power supply industry. In order to maintain stable and reliable operation of power supply system, we must first prevent equipment failure which will cause heavy economic losses and result in material threat to our life and business operation. The effective solution to equipment failures now is the adequate and effective measures based on equipment risk assessment. Giving full consideration to the risk factors and interactions between power transformers in operation based on the analysis of the characteristics and the exiting problems of the current risk assessment and maintenance decision-making theory of power transformers, this paper goes into the details of the risk assessment and maintenance solutions to large transformers by the methodologies of failure mode and inefficiency analysis, obscure mathematics, analytic hierarchy process, risk calculation and assessment, etc., and studies the application of power transformers based on the results of scientific research to improve the risk assessment theory of large transformers and provide information basis for the safe operation of transformers.
