The rapid development of ultra-high voltage have brought higher request for the safety, stability and electric power quality, and the reactive power compensation of the power network becomes more and more important. The magnetic-valve controllable reactor(MCR) has its unique advantages in reactive power compensation and voltage control because it can adjust its capability smoothly and flexibly. This paper mainly focused on the study of ontology structure, operation principles, modeling methodology, design and calculation of MCR.(1) The structure and operation principles are studied. The equivalent magnetic circuit of magnetic valve is established, and the electromagnetic equations are obtained according to the analysis of the different working states. The equivalent circuit of MCR is presented on the basis of the electromagnetic equations.(2) Two-stage MCR models are established in the software of MAXWELL and MATLAB respectively to analyze the field distribution and electric characteristic. The validity of the models are proved by the comparison between the model and theory, which also determines the parameters setting of model.(3) The design method is studied in this paper, which includes the calculation formulas of iron core diameter, sectional area of wire, controllable winding tap, length of magnetic valve. A small rated two-stage MCR is designed and manufactured for the experimental study. The design method is verified to be effective and profitable by the experimental results.
