Nowadays, with the rapid development of economy and power grid, the new transmission lines have been increased speedily. On account of the complex terrain, harsh natural environments, numerous crossing for the corridor, the times of defect and fault tripping on the transmission lines are more and more. However, many difficulties and danger exist for corridor through the mountains, Valley Road, construction, railway, highway, river, pond, residential, factories, farms, plant nurseries, orchard and other routes to carry out acceptance receive and inspection work.In the inspection of transmission line defect and fault finding, at present, it is mainly based on manual inspection and supplemented by the way of the helicopter. But the two ways, there are some limitations. On the one hand, the manual inspection not only is high workload, but also harsh living conditions. Especially the transmission line inspection in the mountains and across the river, as well as after the ice disaster, flood, earthquake, landslide and other natural disasters for fault line, it takes a long time, high human cost and faces on great difficulty. On the other hand, the helicopter inspection requires high technology operation, complex ATC approval procedures, high costs, and inspects less frequently. Meanwhile, it asks for the professional mechanics and inspector which need to spend a lot of manual labor and material resources in the training stage. After technological innovation, equipment modification, it also goes through the rigorous airworthiness procedures and complex ATC approval process.This thesis focuses on the characteristics, application and inspection technology for all kinds of UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle) to analysis and research. It compares the electric rotorcraft with other cruise techniques, and put forward the electric rotorcraft’s advantages of which are in the inspection of transmission line defect and fault finding. And through the actual application situation, the paper verifies that the electric rotorcraft could play a positive role in the inspection of transmission line defect and fault finding from the three aspects of technology, economy, and social benefits.
