Traditional Chinese residential architecture is the essence of the practices and experience over a long period of time by the Chinese people. It acquires abundant ecological design strategy featured with low technology and low energy consumption. Different traditional Chinese residential architecture adapts to different geographical and climatic situation. So naturally, they demonstrates different ecological design strategy. The author selected traditional residential architecture of river valleys in north-eastern Yunnan to study how this type of architecture managed to adapts to the uniqueness of this area in order to extract and summarize the ecological design strategy related.First of all, the author gave a thorough analysis of the climate zone, sun radiation, temperature and humidity of air, wind and precipitation of this area. Based on that, the advantages and disadvantages of this area are summarized. Advantages refer to the climate resources that could be utilized directly by the traditional residential architecture. While the disadvantages are the climate situation that calls for the adjustment of the traditional Chinese residential architecture if the cozy indoor environment is to be guaranteed.Second, the author elaborated on the way traditional Chinese residential architecture in this area made use of to create the cozy indoor environment against the climate disadvantages, including site selection, orientations, shape, space, construction, fencing structure and material and so on. Through this elaboration, the intertwined relations among the traditional Chinese residential architecture is reflected.Besides, the author selected representative traditional Chinese residential architecture in this area to carry out tests on the temperature, humidity, wind speed both outdoor and indoor,thermal tests on the indoor surface radiation temperature in winter and summer. Through an intensive research about the pattern, characteristic and rationale of the data, the author managed to summarize the superiority and inferiority of the traditional Chinese residential architecture in this area and raise suggestion for an improved residential environment.Through analysis and summary of this dissertation, the author wants to provide enlightenment on the effective design strategy for this type of unique climatic situation.
