Due to the rapid development of modern industrial economy and the sharp increase in population, conventional energy sources have been gradually depleted. At the same time, daily living energy in the proportion of total building energy consumption is growing, such as air-conditioning and hot water. Renewable energy can not only effectively alleviate the depletion of conventional energy sources, but also meet the need for building development. At present, the applications of renewable energy in buildings still face many problems. The topic of this study is about optimal design for integrating renewable energy systems in buildings. Firstly, this paper dscribes characteristics and existing problems of current renewable energy applications, such as solar energy application, shallow geothermal energy technology, biomass energy technology, wind energy technology, marine energy technology in buildings, and application technologies of renewable energy.Secondly, the paper summarizes existing problems in the conventional architectural design process, three aspects of the process and the personnel involved in data calculation. The integrated design process is proposed based on the conventional building design process, including five steps:site analysis, architectural design, energy system design, construction design and performance evaluation. Then, optimization of the design process for the building-integrated renewable energy system is discussed. Based on the conventional architectural design method, three methods of optimal design are described under consideration of territoriality, preparation of basic design data and numerical analysis. Finally, case studies of commonly-used renewable energy’s building applications are conducted for analyzing the existing problems in the design and construction and operation management in the real projects under the conventional architectural design process. It was concluded that the integrated design process of renewable energy systems in buildings can achieve the maximum economic benifit, realize energy saving, provide a lower impact on the environment, and make contribution to the building system energy saving and CO2 emission reduction.
