On basis of spline theory and conjugation theory of harmonic drive, a new kind of tooth profile (β tooth profile) (β TP thereafter) was proposed in this paper. This tooth profile can improve the performance of harmonic drive and is featured by easy adjustment. Then a new software was made, which can be used to design β TP of flexspline and its conjugating tooth profile which has a definite backlash with flexible spline. At last,32-80 involute tooth profile was analyzed and verified with β TP. The main work done in this paper is briefly stated as follows:(1) On the basis of work done of involute tooth profile, P TP was proposed based on spline theory. β TP of flexible spline was made out of its initial curve equation of tooth profile and was finally optimized according to a specific optimum target.(2) On the basis of β TP of flexible spline obtained, tooth profile of circular spline was made according to conjugation theory.(3) On the basis of tooth profile of circular spline mentioned above(TPCS), a new curve was calculated which has a gap in normal direction with TPCS.(4) The final tooth profile both of flexible spline and circular spline was described using software of AUTOCAD and also their cubic models were analyzed in the scope of static mechanics using software ANSYS.(5) In the same conditions, performances on stress distribution under the action of same load were compared between β TP flexspline and involute and bi-arc flexspline using software ANSYS. Results show performance of flexible spline with β TP behaviors much better than the others.(6) A software was designed by which detailed β TP of flexible spline and equivalent tooth profile can be easily obtained after inputting some necessary parameters.(7) Harmonic drive of 32-80 with involute tooth profile was verified and last its sample was machined.The above work indicates that performance of harmonic drive with β TP is superior to that of current harmonic drive.
