With the rapid development of human society and economy, the passenger car will become more environmentally, safe, comfortable and even intelligent in the future. Without any doubt, the advancing and innovation of automobile materials play an important role during this process. As well known, most of the latest technologies in the field of automobile materials are protected by patents, which contain a lot of technical information, market trends and legal state. By means of processing and analyzing the concerned patents deeply, the research hotspot, direction of development and market strategies of automobile industry can be obtained. Through making full uses of this information, decisions are drawn up to guide development of the industry from the perspective of patent strategy, which can improve the company’s innovation and competitiveness.In this paper, 3597 pieces of patents in China and 1641 pieces in the world are retrieved in the field of automotive engineering materials technology. On-line patent information analysis system and Microsoft excel were used to add up and process patent intelligence information. The combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were used to process the statistical results.Patent analyses of automotive engineering materials in world demonstrate that the technology in this field is in a rapid development stage. Patent applicants are mainly distributed in five countries: Japan(JP), China(CN), Korea(KR), United States(US) and Germany(DE). While Japan has a lot of patents, the US is strong in this field. Japan and South Korea have the largest number of patents entering the Chinese market. Technology Category particularly concentrated on iron-based alloys, copper alloys, aluminum alloys, metal heat treatment, olefins, polyamides, ABS, polycarbonate and rubber.Patent analysis of automotive engineering materials technology in China is in a rapid development stage, too. C22 C alloys and C08 L polymer compound are the major technology categories of automotive engineering materials and H01 M battery pack follows. These three technologies all have very good prospects for development. The competition between enterprises is fierce, and they lack close cooperation with scientific research institutions. At last, through analyzing the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and challenges in China and learning from the outstanding patent strategy abroad, patent strategy has been worked out from three levels of the state, enterprises and research institutions suitable for China’s enterprises.
