With China’s grain output increased year by year, the demand for storage structure has been increasing. The steel silo structure become popular because of its light weight, high degree of industrialization, convenient replacement andhigh degree of maintenance. However, in recent years, the safety accidents happened frequently, which hindered the promotion and use of the steel silo structure. In order to improve the structure resist buckling bearing capacity, around the silo wall are uniformly arranged vertical stiffening rib method in the past. Vertical stiffening ribs are used to bear vertical load and vertical friction force. Therefore, the intensity and stability of the stiffener determines silo structure safety. However, in, there is no method to check the stability of the stiffening rib in current standards. and no checking method for the stiffening rib stability. So the design of steel silo with variable cross section vertical stiffener stability becomes very difficult.To study the bearing capacity, failure mode and safety performance of the steel silo structure with vertical cross section, this paper used the method of finite element analysis and the model was set. After the analysis, the structure stress performance was get. This paper did the evaluation of structural strength and stability. The results are compared with the standard calculation.According to the finite element analysis results, under static load, the maximum stress appears at the cross-section in the upper stiffener. The safety of the structure mainly depends on the stiffening rib. Silo wall and stiffening rib under load is lower than yield load. Structural strength meet the requirements; through the linear buckling analysis of silo structure, the buckling characteristic value of the first order mode is obtained. The unstable load of the calculation structure is higher than that of the applied load. Structure safety has reliability; The nonlinear analysis of steel silo model is made by arc length method. Finite element analysis of the structure of the ultimate load is lower than the calculated value. In the post buckling structure, the bearing capacity decreases. It shows that the structure is unstable and destroyed before reaching the ultimate strength limit. The finite element analysis results are compared with the calculation results. It shows that the finite element model can well simulate the structure of grain steel silo with large diameter and large diameter.
