Large-scale railway passenger station has specialties like great construction scale, complex functionality, highly personnel density. Once fire breaks out in large railway passenger station, it will be very difficult for personnel to evacuate and cause a huge number of casualties and property losses. Therefore, to make casualties and property losses to the minimum extent, it is very necessary to study on fire-fighting capacity of large-scale railway passenger station.This paper analyzed characteristic of large-scale railway passenger station fire and made identification of fire hazard and hazard classification according to the fire load density and fire heat release rate of different functioning areas in large-railway passenger station. The concept of fire-fighting capacity was discussed, which included fire protection capacity, fire extinguishing capacity, evacuation capacity.This paper quantified fire extinguishing capacity as indoor fire hydrant water consumption. The calculation formula applied to the condition that spray devices and fume extractors lose efficacy was given in the paper. Fire extinguishing capacity of Chengdu north railway station’s upholstered seats waiting room was evaluated and calculated.Fire protection capacity was quantified as amount of smoke produced by relevant smoke bay and calculation method was put forward in the paper. Three fire scenes of Chengdu north railway station were built up by using Pyrosim software according to the field research. Results of fire scenes simulation were discussed, obtaining every corresponding critical evacuation time of fire scenes. Critical evacuation time provide reasonable baisis for personnel evacuation.Evacuation capacity’s representing method in large-scale railway passenger station was given in the paper, according to the definition of evacuation time and evacuation criterion. Mainly factors influencing on evacuation capacity were analyzed. The models of ticket entrances, stairs, passageways and exits were built by Pathfinder simulation software. By comparing with their respective evacuation capacity, the bottleneck of evacuation capacity was found and improvement measures were put forward. The evacuation model of Chengdu north railway station’s upholstered seats waiting room was built by Pathfinder simulation software. By comparing with required safety egress time run out by software and the critical evacuation time, conclusion that whether personnels in waiting room were safe or not was drawn in the paper. The evacuation model of Chengdu north railway station was built by Pathfinder simulation software. Evacuation number of personnel in every time point and total evacuation capacity was run out by simulation. Finally, the maximum number of waiting personnel in Chengdu north railway station was obtained.
