Because of the complex terrain and geological conditions in many railway and highway projects in the southwest mountain area of China, the retaining structure is applied a lot.And the gravity retaining walls are among the most common used. In the early time, the gravity retaining walls are generally built with the stone material artificially. But in recent years, it’s gradually turning into rubble concrete or concrete cast-in-place to make the quality of the project better controlled. With the development of the society and the increasing pursuit of the people, common retaining structure has been unable to meet the needs of the society today. The purpose of this study is to invent a new type of retaining wall structure, which can not only meet the requirements of rapid construction today, but also has the function of green planting. According to this research topic, we have done the main work as follows.First, we summarize some retaining wall styles about the prefabricated blocks and blocks which have green plant-growing function by searching and analysing some patents and documents at home and abroad. And also we search papers about retaining theoretical analysis and field tests. By doing this, we get some conclusions and have a certain depth of understanding on the content of study.Second, on the basis of research and analysis of patents and combined with the results of the theoretical calculations, we invent a new type of retaining wall block. The advantages and feasibility of the new block are analyzed, which lays a theoretical foundation for its further popularization and application.Then, by calculating, we analyse the factors of the whole stability of the retaining wall, including the different heights of the walls, the wall inclination rate, internal friction angle of the soil behind the wall,the size of the wall heel and toe.So we can sum up the complete design process. We also do some calculations and analysis on the unique wall height of 6m, including stability analysis, controlled size requirements, reinforcement calculation and so on.Finally, we carry out on the mechanical properties of walls, soil behind walls, basement and other field trials to test, by simulating the site construction and filling condition of the retaining walls. We analyse the whole load bearing performance comparatively and verify rationality of the design method. Also, we do comparative analysis on the results of field test and theoretical calculation, thus we can do modifications on some related and empirical parameters. All these can provide reference for future theoretical calculation.
