In recent years, as railway construction process continues to accelerate, the disadvantages of the traditional method of construction, such as low efficiency and poor construction quality problems loom large, it is difficult to meet the demand of engineering requirement. Railway as a huge system engineering, it urgently needs a new technology and concept to realize the goal of low consumption, low pollution and sustainable development. BIM technology has been applied quite widely in construction industry at home and abroad, obtained the good application effect. With the characteristics of low cost and high efficiency gradually taken seriously and promoted, BIM technology provides new ideas for production and management of railway industry.This paper studied the BIM application in engineering construction and operation of railway industry from the following several aspects, and it carried through the BIM modeling practice research for parking yard facilities of urban rail transit system.1.It deeply analyzed the current research situation of BIM in construction and application prospect of BIM in railway industry, introduced the characteristics of railway engineering. With the need of the development of engineering information, it emphasized the BIM own application value in railway engineering.2.Combining with the BIM characteristics, it applied its advantage to the five phases of the whole life cycle of railway engineering. Namely, the early planning phase, field investigation phase, design phase, construction phase and operation phase. It studied the effect of application point in each phase, made up the deficiency of traditional methods in the railway engineering construction and operation.At the same time, it also described the difficult point for BIM in railway engineering application.3.It discussed the current application obstacle of BIM development in domestic railway industry at a macro level, and summarized as five aspects. Namely, norms and standards, laws and regulations, collaborative concept, software system and personnel training, it deeply analyzed the corresponding solving strategy. The government and industry organizations play an important role, should take effective measures to accelerate the development of BIM. At the same time, it also discussed the application for BIM combine with other technologies in railway engineering.4. In the case of the parking yard of urban rail transit system, based on Revit software, it carried through the BIM modeling practice for parking yard facilities. After the analysis of application effect, it verified the BIM technology application value in vehicle base design. In addition, it also studied the collaborative design in engineering project implementation process, it should be selected according to the project characteristics and practical situations, etc.Railway is not only indispensable national public infrastructure, but also a key for advanced technology reaching out to the world, the construction should be timely follow up. Although the railway development is slow, there are still many problems in the application of BIM technology and practice, but it brings significant engineering value. We need to use correct and long-term view to view its development, shouldn’t be impatient for success. BIM technology will steadily pushing forward the construction of the railway industry in the near future instead of CAD, leading the railway construction to the higher level development of informatization and intelligent.
